This preliminary presentation and discussion will at least give a general indication of the significance of these discoveries for the study of early Mahayana in general and particularly in Gandhāra.

One of the most exciting finds in recent archeology has been the identification of Buddhist manuscripts from caves in Gandhāra which have given us a first-hand window into the period during which the Mahāyāna was forming.
